Uber and Lyft Accidents

Have you ever used Uber or Lyft transportation to get to your destination? If so, then you’re one of millions. Uber and Lyft facilitate an average of 15 million rides every day across the globe. With the sheer number of rides, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that accidents happen regularly. If you were involved in an Uber or Lyft accident, would you know what to do? As a passenger, it’s important to understand what you should do in the event of a crash. Here’s an overview of the steps you need to follow:

1. Call the Cops

If you’re a passenger in an Uber or Lyft crash, then you might feel obliged to let your driver handle the situation. It is important not to overstep the driver, but it’s equally as important to protect your own rights, too. The best course of action is to ask the driver what he or she plans on doing. If the driver attempts to flee the scene or doesn’t want to call the police, then gently assert your authority as a passenger. You have the right and responsibility to report any motor vehicle accident that may have resulted in injuries. If no one calls the authorities, then it may be difficult in the future to prove that an accident even occurred. This is especially true when the driver wants to avoid accountability and attempts to later deny that the collision happened. If you were involved in an accident involving private, individual drivers, wouldn’t you call the police? There’s no reason to act differently if your accident happens when you are a Lyft or Uber passenger. Call the police.

2. Document Everything

Next, start documenting all the evidence you can. Take screenshots of your Uber receipts, and take note of the driver’s name and information. If possible, talk to the other people involved in the crash. Get their contact information as well. When you see witnesses, ask politely if they’d be willing to share their contact information with you or explain what they saw to the police. Take photographs of the scene if you have your smartphone handy. Write things down and take pictures at the scene. Don’t trust yourself to remember. Lawsuits can take years and your memory may fade by the time of your deposition or a court proceeding like arbitration or trial.

3. Go to the Doctor

Once the initial aftermath of the crash is under control, you need to visit your doctor. If your injuries are serious, then you should head to the emergency room immediately following the accident. Otherwise, schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Your doctor will have the ability to rule out severe or delayed injuries that may not be overly obvious right away. If your crash did lead to injuries, then you’ll want to file a claim. If you’re in doubt after an accident about whether or not to go to the ER, go! Once you’ve seen a doctor, reach out to the Law Offices of Karim Arzadi for more information on how to go about seeking compensation for your medical bills.
